Why you need a mentor in your life

Right, following on from yesterday’s post I had my dream list and although it had given me a ray of hope, I still had no clue what to do or how to get there! I was still stuck in my rut.

Worse still, I was dealing with overwhelming feelings of shame, guilt and condemnation that had driven me to isolate myself. I didn’t want anyone to see me or find out what I had “done.” I’d shut all my friends out and refused to leave the house. So, what happened next was nothing short of a miracle.

It was a few days after I’d written my dream list. My mother walked into my room and announced a visitor waiting at the front door. “Should I answer the door?” she’d asked, fully expecting me to say a firm “No” as I’d done many times. But for some reason I decided to see this person. It was someone I respected, who had been a mentor to me in the past.

And as a result of this person coming into my space at that time, three very distinct things happened.

1. I was encouraged and inspired because he believed in my dream straightaway. He didn’t try to reason with me or point out the impracticalness of my plan. He’d simply said, “With God it’s possible, go for it!” That was as refreshing as ice cold water to a man trapped in the dessert heat for days without sustenance. All I’d heard before then in my own head and from the people around me was that my dream was a stupid idea.

2. He assessed my situation and told me very bluntly that in my current state, I didn’t have the required knowledge, wisdom or belief to move me to the next level. So he gave me a book. “Read it and practise it.” he’d said. I followed his instruction and that book changed my life. From its pages, I got a winning strategy for transforming the mind which I practised diligently (and still do) and it absolutely worked! The impact of its truths and suggestions on building confidence into the mind and releasing God’s power to work for me was so complete that I still read it about once a year and it is required reading for my clients.

3. It was during the course of one of our conversations in the subsequent weeks that I got the idea of what to do next. And once I knew what to do, a new burst of energy hit me and I sprang into action. That single action led me into a series of subsequent actions that eventually placed me exactly where I wanted to be, living where I wanted to live, with a job paying more than what I’d wanted to earn, and it all happened in exactly eleven months. (One month short of my target!)

Looking back, I know for a fact that my cry to God for help brought that person into my life. It was his way of getting the help I needed to me. Had I not taken the opportunity, my life would have gone on a completely different trajectory from what it is today, or at the very least those dreams in my heart would have been delayed a while.

This reminds me of the fictitious story of a man trapped in a flood, with the waters rising at an alarming rate. At different points, people in a row boat, a speed boat and an helicopter found him and offered to help him. Each time his reply was, “No, my God will save me!” The floods continued to rise and eventually overwhelmed him. He found himself in front of God and asked, “I trusted you! Why didn’t you save me?” God’s reply was, “I sent you a row boat, a speed boat and an helicopter to rescue you. What else did you want me to do?”

Christians are praying for God to show up, yet they are ignoring the practical help and wisdom he’s bringing into their space everyday – books, audios, mentors, etc.

Tip for today. No matter how much you know, it is clearly not enough for that next level you desire; otherwise you would already be there. What got you to where you are now won’t get you to where you want to be. You need a new level of wisdom, support and strategy. Therefore, actively seek out and take advantage of opportunities to be mentored or coached by someone who has achieved what you want to achieve.

If my story resonates with you, and you want to work with someone who has consistently achieved big dreams in the last 15 years (and helped others to do so), book a consultation to get on my one-to-one or group program.
